UEFA Euro Qualifying 2012

Sweden had some luck when the drawing for the 2012 European championship was made today. The Netherlands is the toughest competitor, but looking at the rest of the teams, it could have been worse.

Except Holland, Sweden will play with Hungary (again), Finland, Moldova and San Marino. The winner of the group qualifies for the tournament. As do the best of the second placed teams in all the groups. The rest of the second placed teams will play another qualification round against Eachohter.

Sweden failed to qualify for the World Cup in South Africa this summer. Thus the next time, they will play other than friendly games is this autumn when the qualification games for Euro 2012 starts.

There is a new manager for the Swedish team. Erik Hamrén has replaced Lars Lagerbäck who took his country to five successive championships before failing to qualify for this year’s World Cup. One of the biggest topics of discussion is if the brightest star in the time, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, shall continue to play for the national team or not.

Event though the draw could have been worse, both Finland and Hungary can create problems for the Swedes. Finland has done some very good results recentelly and Hungary has cretaed problems before. Most Swedes remember for example how Zlatan Ibrahimovic won the game for his team with a last second (!) goal on over time in Budapest this automn.

The Tournament will be played in Poland and Ukraine in the summer of 2012, thus these two countries are already qualified. Playing cities will be Warsaw, Gdánsk, Wroclaw and Poznán in Poland and Kiev, Lviv, Kharkiv and Donetsk in Ukraine.

Netherlands: The Dutch football federation is braced for another dispute with German champion Bayern Munich after selecting midfielder Mark van Bommel for a Euro 2012 qualifier against Sweden on Tuesday.

The Dutch, who have already earned the ire of Bayern over their playing Arjen Robben during the World Cup, were asked by the German club to send van Bommel home immediately after he was injured last Friday in a match against Moldova, which the Netherlands won 1-0.

Both national coach Bert van Marwijk, van Bommel’s father-in-law, and the Dutch medical staff said he had recovered.

According to the Dutch ANP news agency, van Bommel played 70 minutes in the win against Sweden before being replaced.

“This is a storm in a teacup,” van Marwijk said shortly before the kickoff. “Mark is not injured. But I understand the Bayern directors, since they have a lot invested in him.”

But van Marwijk was not as conciliatory after the 4-1 victory, which saw the Dutch make it four wins from four qualifiers.

“I find it a pity the amount of pressure Bayern put on to try and prevent Mark from playing this evening,” he said.

“All the scans showed that Mark could play. I heard the doctors say that his knee was OK.

“Therefore he played. We are trying to get a place at the Euro 2012 finals. The Swedish match was an important match for us to win. And Mark is one of the pillars of the side.”

Bayern, one of the most aggressive European clubs when it comes to taking on national federations over its players, decided to recall the player after consulting with its doctor, Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt.

Van Bommel, Bayern’s captain, is a vital element in the Dutch midfield known for his tough tackles.

Following the Moldova match, van Bommel said the pain in his knee felt worse. He missed training on Sunday but returned on Monday.

The dispute over Robben, the Bundesliga’s player of the year last season, exploded when the injury-prone winger suffered a recurrence of the pre-finals thigh injury that had looked likely to rule him out of the World Cup in South Africa.

The Dutch medical team worked wonders to get him fit enough to start playing in the group stage and he starred for the Orange as they made it to the final, where they lost to Spain 1-0.

Robben has not played at all this season for Bayern, which has struggled in the Bundesliga. The German side has demanded that the Dutch federation pay part of Robben’s salary.
